It's pantomime time for FAOS

Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 13:16

IT HAS been a typically busy year for the Frome Amateur Operatic Society (FAOS), with performances of Oklahoma!, Spellbound's production of 42nd Street, Little Shop Of Horrors and last month's FAOS Singers – Showtime.

To finish the year and start 2009 in style, FAOS will be staging Mother Goose.

Humphrey Barnes will be stepping into his usual shoes as this year's Dame Mother Goose.

He will be joined by the society's Rose Bowl Award nominee Andrew Carpenter as Demon Discontent.

Charles Hart Trophy winner Dora Bishop will be playing the kind and sensitive principal boy, Colin, alongside Bethany Harris as principle girl, Jill.

The story of Mother Goose is possibly the oldest story to be turned into a pantomime. It dates back to an ancient Greek legend about a goose that laid golden eggs. It is also one of the earliest pantomimes seen in Britain.

The story first appeared in 1806 as an early pantomime called Harlequin And Mother Goose or The Golden Egg.

The pantomime of Mother Goose, as it is known today, was first staged at Drury Lane Theatre, London, in 1902.

In previous versions Mother Goose was a mysterious character – an old crone, almost like a kindly witch. The poor woman befriends a magical goose that provides her with golden eggs.

She is rich, but there is something she wants more than money – she wants to be young and beautiful. The pantomime has a strong moral: beauty and wealth cannot bring you happiness.

Performances run from Tuesday, December 30 to Saturday, January 3.

There will be a matinee performance each day at 2.30pm with evening performances on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm.

Ticket prices cost £11.50 for balcony seats, £10.50 for stalls and £9.50 concessions in the stalls.

Also, for the first time this year, an FAOS calendar has been produced by the society's resident FAOS member photographer, Debi Bishop, that incorporates photos from this year's shows.

For tickets or a FAOS calendar call Frome's Memorial Theatre box office on 01373 462795.
