Players are asked to get their kit off to save club

RADSTOCK Town FC members are so dedicated to getting their club out of debt they will be asking players to strip off for a fundraising calendar.

They are hoping that if the plan goes ahead, it will bring in vital finance for the Miners.

The Somerset Guardian is backing the club's campaign to get out of heavy debts that could result in the closure of Radstock Town, one of Somerset's oldest football clubs.

The calendar is one of several ideas for fundraising coming from members, said secretary Dave Gregory.

"They are looking into getting players to do a charity calendar, partially stripping," he said.

"We are going to talk to the players about it this week."

Player John Kilburn has already taken on a hefty task.

"He is going to be sponsored to get his back and front waxed, after a home game on Saturday, November 22," said Mr Gregory.

Another player, Lee Bryant, has turned down an offer to leave the club for Welton Rovers.

Mr Gregory said: "He wants to stay faithful to Radstock Town, where he has played for almost all his life."

Team members are all making a sacrifice.

He said: "They have said they will not claim expenses, apart from a bit of petrol money.

"This Saturday, the first team is playing at Ilfracombe."

Other fundraising events planned include a Christmas quiz at the clubhouse on Saturday, December 6, at 8pm.

There was a quick response to last week's front page story about the club's plight.

The club said it had been touched to receive a £100 donation from Wells City FC.

"It's an unbelievably kind gesture," said Mr Gregory.

A businessman rang the club to say he was interested in helping and Sainsbury's said it will consider offering aid.

But the future of the club is still uncertain, as it tries to find a way out of at least £30,000 in debt and to appoint a new chairman, who will "fly the flag for the Miners".

Anyone who can help, with sponsorship, kit, donations, renting the cluhouse for social events, or volunteering to fill the chairmanship, can call Mr Gregory on 07725 024989.
