ORGANISERS of this year’s Midsomer Norton Carnival have blamed the credit crunch for a £1,000 drop in money collected at the event.
Hundreds of revellers lined the streets of Westfield to watch the 60th carnival come to Midsomer Norton. The colourful event attracted fantastic floats, and raised £3,185.22.
Organiser Allen Curtis said: "Unfortunately, Midsomer Norton followed the trend in the recent carnivals on the circuit by having a smaller collection."
Despite the credit crunch biting and the wet weather, the streets brightened up with lights, music and dazzling costumes as scores of illuminated floats made their way through the streets.
This year’s carnival procession was led by carnival queen, 16-year-old Fredricka Lines, her attendants and majorette groups from around the area, including Westfield’s Shimmer Star Twirlers.
Among the impressive floats was Midsomer Norton’s Mardons Carnival Club’s entry, Ugly Barbie, which saw participants dressed as unsightly versions of the popular doll.
Stephen Rogers, club chairman, said: "This is our local carnival so we always make the extra effort. We are one of the oldest local clubs that still exist and we are proud to be here."
Coleford’s Luckington Carnival Club’s entry, entitled Startrekking, also proved a big hit as the club made a parody of Captain Kirk and his crew.
Organiser Hazel Franklin said: "All in all the carnival was very successful. We had a great crowd and were lucky with the weather.
"I think everyone has been feeling the effects of the credit crunch and the collections reflect that, but don’t worry, we will still make sure next year’s events will be just as fun.
"What we are now looking for are new members to join the carnival committee."
