Winscombe Ladies 1st XI 1 Mendip Ladies 1st XI 1

Mendip Ladies 1st XI picked up a point at Winscombe on Saturday to remain third in the Central Division of the West Clubs Women's Hockey League.

After a postponement the previous weekend, the visitors' eagerness was evident as they created several early chances. Within ten minutes, striker Charlene Vranch twice found herself one-on-one with the Winscombe keeper, but two good saves kept the scores level.

A third opportunity, following some neat play involving defender Cherilyn Carey and midfielder Sarah Hall, saw Vranch fire home at the far post to give the visitors a deserved lead.

Mendip's advantage was short-lived, however, as Winscombe counter-attacked down the right and a misunderstanding in the Mendip D led to a scrappy goal.

The second half saw both sides working hard, with Mendip right-back Brenda Scott making some great interceptions on her first-team debut and April Callow tackling well.

With time running out, a series of penalty corners and counter-attacking runs were exchanged but neither side was able to find the decisive score.

Mendip's player of the match was Demelza Clegg, who worked tirelessly to lead the attacking line.
